UNWOVEN THREADS solo exhibition / Art History Gallery at University of St. Thomas

on view February 1st - May 22nd 2022

After years of conceptually unweaving the fibers of her identity to understand her place in the context of her bloodline and this moment in time, Keobounpheng emerges to celebrate an enlightened foundational warp. Through geometry, color, and thread she imagines what is possible when our assimilating learned behavioral weft is removed.

A Virtual Exhibition Of Artwork Made During The 2020 Pandemic.  Usually At Home.  Sometimes About Home.

Early This Summer I Noticed When Viewing Instagram That Many Artists (Including Some Who Might Not Call Themselves “Artist”) Had Started New–Frequently Daily–Art Projects.  Exactly What Motivated This Activity Varied, But It Has Been So Widespread That Putting Together An Exhibition Of Such Art Made During This Time Seemed Like A Fruitful Way To Reflect On Our Current State.  To Be Clear, When I Say “Our Current State” I’m Speaking To The Isolated, Yet, In That Common Isolation, Somehow Shared, State.

101 Bowls is an ambitious, wildly creative and one-of-a-kind collage of local and international handmade vessels that showcase the work of more than 101 different artists and organizations that ASI intersects with.  It includes works in many mediums, and many organizations and institutions.

The installation attempts to showcase ASI's connection with the far-ranging Nordic and other networks that foster and propagate handmade diversity.

There are four sections exploring ASI's enduring links to the Nordic region, leadership in the arts and cultural community, stewardship of heritage and promotion of craftmanship.

The sections of bowls represented are:

  • Nordic + Sweden: vessels that represent ongoing ties to Sweden and the Nordic region.
  • Art + Culture + Community: reflecting the dynamic arts and cultural scene of Minnesota and the region.
  • Craft + Maker: represents artists and organizations that ASI is connected to.
  • Culture + Heritage:  representing the efforts that ensure the continuity of Scandinavian cultural identity and heritage.

Tia's BOSOM BOWL is included in the Art + Culture + Community section.

In conjunction with the opening reception of her solo exhibition 100 Days, Tia Keobounpheng will talk candidly about her journey from burn-out to rekindling her creative spirit. First through expanding her skill-set and jewelry design business to incorporate metal work and then through the addition of a daily creative practice. She will share insight from her ongoing daily watercolor practice and how it acts as a conduit for channeling her creativity into other aspects of her work and life - and how anyone can benefit from connecting with their own flow more often.

Tia Salmela Keobounpheng is a fiscal year 2017 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund

Tia Keobounpheng

100 Days Exhibition captures my explorations in metal over the course of 100 days. The show illustrates the linear and hap-hazard process of following creative ideas and how a commitment to a daily creative-flow practice reveals the impact of small actions accumulated over time. It has become a viable practice for maintaining my creativity amidst the realities of working as a professional artist. The epilogue to the show features three sculptures completed after the 100 days. They mark the beginning of a new typology of work that is a departure from design-driven, functional objects  into a world of artistic expression and commentary.

Reception: January 11 / 5-8pm
Artist Talk: January 11 / 7pm

100 Days of Creative Balance - Installation

  • Mon, Aug 14, 2017 10:00 AM 10:00 Sun, Oct 29, 2017 5:00 PM 17:00
  • Google Calendar ICS

On April 4, 2017 Tia embarked on a 100 day project along with countless others who committed to share a creative endeavor of some kind on Instagram each day for 100 days. Intended to be a reward at the end of a productive day, Tia allowed herself one watercolor painting each evening as a means of balancing out the entreprenuerial-driven creative energy of her work with a more free flowing creative energy. On a whim, she created a 10x10 grid of dots for her first piece and ultimately that grid was the starting point for each and every piece.

Tia gave an artist talk on August 6th at the American Swedish Institute (ASI) as part of her Artist Initiative Grant work through the Minnesota State Arts Board. She spoke about her experience of being a working artist in Minnesota, including sharing candidly about burning out and finding a way to rekindle her passion and creative fire. The 100 day project is the most recent ingredient in that ongoing remedy and was installed for the day during the talk for visitors to view.

ASI asked to keep the project on view for a longer period of time. It is installed on the main floor near FIKA on the way to the mansion and will remain there through October 29th.

Practicing Creativity

Finnish-American designer and artist, Tia Salmela Keobounpheng, is best known for the bold and colorful laser-cut jewelry that she started making almost ten years ago. She will talk about her approach to designing jewelry collections and her recent pivot to hand-crafting jewelry from metal. She will share insight into her personal journey from burn-out to rekindling her creative fire and ultimately tapping into the power of nurturing a daily creative practice through a 100 day project that will culminate on July 12th. Tasking herself with one watercolor a day to balance each day's creative-entrepreneur work of running a jewelry business with an hour of creativity simply for enjoyment, she titled the project #100daysofcreativebalance. For one day only, all 100 original pieces from the project will be on display at ASI before, during, and after her talk.

Tia Salmela Keobounpheng is a fiscal year 2017 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
